Introduction
To grasp the actual market trends of
mainframe computers, the Server WS Business Committee of the Japan Electronics
and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) has been registering
the applicable mainframe computer models. Below is a summary of the shipments in
2001.
Overall
Trends
The number of units shipped increased by
6% with a tendency seen in transition from compact to medium sized models.
Despite this increase in the number of units shipped, shipments in terms of
value dropped by 5% due to reduced unit price.
Trends of Shipments by
Domestic Scale
The overall domestic shipments was down
5% in terms of value to 474.5 billion yen but up 6% in terms of unit sales to
1,574 units.
By price range, shipments of large PCs
(above 250 million yen class) dropped 5% to 341.9 billion yen in terms of value,
but increased 5% to 477 units in terms of unit sales.
Shipments of medium PCs (above 40 million
yen but less than 250 million yen class) increased 19% to 123.3 billion yen in
terms of value, and increased 40% to 866 units in terms of unit
sales.
Shipments of compact PCs (below 40
million yen class) dropped 75% to 9.3 billion yen in terms of value, and dropped
44% to 231 units in terms of unit sales.
Trends of Shipments by
Industry
By industry, shipments of civil service
and government related organizations increased 12% to 136.4 billion yen in terms
of value from the previous year, but dropped 1% to 322 units in terms of unit
sales.
Shipments of local civil service on the
other hand dropped 6% to 53.1 billion yen in terms of value, but increased 16%
to 207 units in terms of unit sales. Shipments in primary industries dropped 23%
to 0.7 billion yen in terms of value, but increased 60% to 8 units in terms of
unit sales. Shipments in the manufacturing industry increased 22% to 74.2
billion yen in terms of value, and increased 12% to 399 units in terms of unit
sales. In the sales industry, shipments dropped 6% to 20 billion yen in terms of
value, but increased 12% to 192 units in terms of unit sales. In the financial
sector, shipments dropped 26% to 104.3 billion yen in terms of value and dropped
17% to 172 units in terms of unit sales. In the service industry, shipments
dropped 12% to 76.5 billion yen in terms of value, and stayed flat at 209 units
in terms of unit sales. For hospitals, schools, etc., shipments dropped 34% to 3
billion yen in terms of value, but increased by 83% to 42 units in terms of unit
sales.
The ranking of shipments by industry in
terms of value was first place “civil service and government related
organizations”, second place “financial sector”, third place “services”, fourth
place “manufacturing”, fifth place “local civil service”, sixth place “sales”,
seventh place “others”, eighth place “hospitals and schools, etc.”, and ninth
place “primary industries”, showing a switch in place between “civil service and
government related organizations” and “financial sector”.
Prospects for
2002
The downward trends of about 10% annually
should continue, but persistent demands for mainframes as highly reliable social
infrastructures are expected. Decrease in shipments was halted temporarily by
smooth sales in the latter half term, but repercussions of 2001 are expected to
lead to drop in shipments by 10% in terms of unit sales and by 15% in terms of
values in 2002.
These
figures were announced on May 27. The full text is available at the JEITA
homepage (www.jeita.co.jp).
