Total Shipments
Overall
shipments of personal computer (hereafter referred to as PC) bodies in Japan in
2001 (April 2001 to March 2002) (domestic shipments + exports) totaled
11,366,000 units (88% versus previous year). The total shipments including
peripheral units was 2587.2 billion yen (83% versus previous year), of which
shipments of PC bodies in terms of value was 1873.3 billion yen (82% versus
previous year).
Total
shipments of PC bodies in the fourth quarter term (January to March 2002) was
3,288,000 units (85% versus previous year) in terms of unit sales. Total
shipments in terms of value was 691.3 billion yen (80% versus previous year),
of which shipments of PC bodies in terms of value was 534.9 billion yen (81%
versus previous year).
Domestic Shipments
Domestic
shipments of PC bodies in 2001 was 10,686,000 units (88% versus previous year).
Total domestic shipments including peripheral units in terms of value was
2125.3 billion yen (81% versus previous year). Of this, shipments of PC bodies
in terms of value was 1769.2 billion yen (83% versus previous year), so that
the shipments of PC bodies in terms of unit sales dropped below the previous
year for the first time since 1997, and that in terms of value since 1998.
Shipments
of PC bodies in the fourth quarter term in terms of unit sales was 3,091,000
units (84% versus previous year). Total shipments in terms of value was 601.8
billion yen (79% versus previous year), of which shipments of PC bodies in
terms of value was 509.7 billion yen (81% versus previous year).
The
domestic PC market in 2001 was heavily affected by the continuing recession. In
the first half term, corporate investments in informatization were strong and
helped support the market, but growth was poor in the latter half term. Individual
spending cooled down from the previous year, but in the fourth quarter term,
sales recovered slightly with invigorated selling in spring.
As a
result, though fiscal year prospects had been 10,600,000 units (8% versus
previous year), eventually shipments were slightly higher at 10,686,000 units.
Shipments
of PC bodies in terms of value was 1769.2 billion yen.
By
type, shipments of desktops was 4,862,000 units (83% versus previous year) and
portables was 5,824,000 units (93% versus previous year, 55% component ratio),
indicating a marked shift to portables. The 55% component ratio of portables
marked record high in terms of fiscal year.
Some
of the reasons for this include, 1)enhanced price performance with the mounting
of large LCDs, high performance CPU, CD-R, DVD integrated drives, etc.,
2)space-saving needs, 3)increased use of second machines, 4)increase in mobile
use, etc.
In
the fourth quarter term, shipments of desktops was 1,388,000 units (83% versus
previous year), while portables was 1,703,000 units (84% versus previous year,
55% component ratio).
Desktops
have stopped slightly lower unit price due to the shift to LCD models centering
around consumer types, and shift in users replacing their computers or buying a
second computer to high performance models.
Exports
Exports
of PC bodies in 2001 was 680,000 units (82% versus previous year). Total
shipments in including peripheral units in terms of value was 461.9 billion yen
(91% versus previous year), of which shipments of PC bodies in terms of value
was 104.1 billion yen (74% versus previous year).
